Why Choose an Epoxy Coating for your Garage Floor?
An epoxy floor with a flake design is a great choice for a garage! This style not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides a durable, slip-resistant, and easy-to-clean surface. Here’s an overview of what to expect and some tips for achieving the best results:
First, choose the type of epoxy. 100% Solid Epoxy offers the highest durability but requires careful application as it sets quickly. Water-Based Epoxy is easier to apply but less durable, making it good for light-traffic garages. Solvent-Based Epoxy is a middle ground between the above two, though it may have stronger fumes during application.
Next, consider your flake options. Color Choices include various hues like grays, blues, tans, and whites to match any style. Flake Size ranges from small to large, with larger flakes giving a more pronounced texture. You also have Coverage options like partial or full broadcast, where more flakes mean more texture and color density.
Preparation is key. We started by cleaning thoroughly to remove any stains, oil, and debris; pressure washing helps with deep cleaning. The next step is Etching or Grinding, which preps the concrete surface for better bonding with the epoxy. Next we complete the priming phase with a primer layer before we apply the epoxy can also improve adhesion. For the application process, we start with a Base Coat by rolling on the base epoxy layer to ensure even coverage. Then, we broadcast the flakes by throwing them into the air and letting them fall while the base coat is still wet for even distribution. Once the flakes are set, we apply a Topcoat of clear epoxy or polyaspartic to lock in the flakes and provide extra protection.
The benefits are considerable. Epoxy flooring provides Enhanced Durability as it’s resistant to chemical spills, oil, and heat. It’s Easy to Clean with a non-porous surface; and increases safety with an Anti-Slip Surface from the flake texture, which reduces the risk of slipping when wet. This type of flooring is long-lasting and visually appealing, making it perfect for a garage, basement, or patio that sees a lot of use. Maintenance is simple: Just keep the floor clean by regularly sweeping and occasionally mopping, and use a non-abrasive cleaner to avoid scratching the topcoat.
